We are a working urban farm that models, promotes and educates about sustainable food systems, environmental stewardship, community development and access to good food for all.
In September 2007 Friends of Zenger Farm moved into the historic Zenger farmhouse that was thoughtfully renovated with the energy consumption and the environment at the forefront. The farmhouse that the Zengers once lived in is now a center for community involvement and greenbuilding education.
The farmhouse has 36 165watt Photovoltaic array panels that cover the wrap around porch. The solar panels will collect as much energy as the house uses creating a “net zero energy use” facility. Portland General Electric provided most of the funding with additional trust from Energy Trust of Oregon. Environmental Buliding Supplies provided the panels and the installation.
All precipitation that falls on the roof of the farmhouse will be collected in two 4,800 gallon cisterns manufactured by Scafco. The rainwater will be filtered and used for potable water in the house.
Throughout the farmhouse there are numerous examples of reclaimed and recycled materials, energy efficient systems, water efficient systems and locally made products.
If you have additional questions about these green building aspects or would like a tour of the farmhouse please contact Jill Kuehler, jill@zengerfarm.org or call the farm at 503.282.4245.
