Welcome to Zenger Farm

We are a working urban farm that models, promotes and educates about sustainable food systems, environmental stewardship, community development and access to good food for all.

Healthy Eating on a Budget

The Healthy Eating on a Budget program builds community and empowers participants to grow, shop for and prepare healthy and affordable meals by offering workshops and demonstrations in our surrounding neighborhoods.  To schedule a program or learn more contact Prairie Hale, 503-282-4245, prairie@zengerfarm.org

Locations

We host programs at Zenger Farm or partner locations in outer southeast Portland, with locations closest to the farm given priority.

Workshops

Our fun and interactive workshops engage participants in exploring strategies for healthy eating on a budget. While building skills, knowledge and community, participants get to know one another and consider which strategies make sense for them. We tailor our workshops to participants' interests and can focus on cooking skills, recipe sharing, budgeting, menu planning, shopping strategies, gardening, neighborhood food resources and more. A workshop can last from 1 hour to 3 hours and includes a snack or a meal highlighting locally grown seasonal produce.

Demonstrations

We offer mobile cooking, gardening and nutrition demonstrations at community events. Our interactive demonstrations focus on locally grown seasonal produce and healthy and affordable ingredients. We provide samples and recipes.

Partner Responsibilities

Partners hosting a Healthy Eating on a Budget workshop or demonstration agree to:

-Advertise the workshop or demonstration

-Register and ensure attendance of 10 to 25 participants

-Provide childcare and interpretation as needed (Zenger Farm may have funds to assist with both).

See partner agreement form for full responsibilities.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers help with workshop facilitation, shopping, food preparation, youth activities, cooking demonstrations and more. Skilled cooks and residents of outer southeast Portland are especially encouraged to volunteer with our program. Learn more on our volunteer page (see Cooking Educators) or contact Prairie at prairie@zengerfarm.org or 503-282-4245.
